Madeira has a subtropical climate that is very smooth and pleasant. During the summer it can be acceptable warm and during the winter it is mild.Throughout the year the temperatures are between 16° C – 22° C and the water temperatures are between 16° C – 20° C.
As in most northern hemisphere countries January is one of the most coldest months, although cold is a relative understanding with an average day temperature of 18° C and a night temperature of 13,3° C. In addition one day has about 7,4 hours of sunshine. Count on 7 rainy days and the water temperature is around 20° C.
February had an average temperaturf of 18,5° C during the day and 13,1° C during the night. The amount of sun hours is 6,1 hours per day and there are onaverage 6 rainy days. The water temperature is around 18° C.
The weather in this month is more or less the same as in February. For example the temparture is around 18,5° C during the day and 13,6° C at night. The number of sun hours is 6,4 on average with 7 rainy days. The water temperatur stays 18° C.
In April, temperatures rise a little. The daytime temperature is around 19,6° C and at nights it drops to 14,2° C. There is also more sunshine: about 7 hours per day. April has on average only 4 rainy days and the water temperature rises slightly to 19° C.
In May, springs really begins to start with a temperature of 20,4° C during the da and 15,4° C during the night. The number of sun hours rises to 7,9 en on average there are only 2 rainy days. The water temperature does not change, 19° C.
In June you can count on average temperatures of 22,1° C during the day. The nights are getting warmer with an average temperature of 17,5° C. However, the amount of sun hours during the day decreases to 6,4 on average. Excellent walking conditions, also because only 1 rainy day has to be taken into account this month. The water temperature rises one degree to 20° C.
The thermometer rises to 23,6° C on average during the day and drops to 18,8° C at night. The amount of sun hours is 7,9 en normally it does not rain in July. The water temperature can reach 22° C .
In August during the day the temperature is around 24,6° C and at night around 19,6° C. This month has the peak of sunshine: 8,4 average per day! Er can be a rainy day and the water temperature is on average around 24° C.
This month has average temperatures of 24,7° C during the day and 19,4° C at night. Still 7,4 sun hours per day and count on 2 rainy days. The temperature of the sea water is around 24° C.
In October it starts to cool down a bit: during the day 23,6° C and during the night 18,2° C. Even though there are on average 7 rainy days you still can count on around 6,5 sun hours per day. The water temperature is still very pleasant: 23° C.
Now temperatures ´drop´till around 21,5° C during the day and 16,2° C at night. It could rain in the Madeira Nature Reserve and also in the capitol Funchal some rain showers could occur . November has an average of 8 rainy days, but still 5,3 hours of sunshine per day. The temperature of the water is around 18° C.
In December mercury rises to 19,6° C during the day and drops to 14,2° C at night. Rain showers are mostly in the north, count on 7 rainy days this month. The number of sun hours per day is averaged 4,9 and the water temperature is 20° C.
The south coast has the most sunshine hours and lower humidity. On other parts of Madeira the average humidity can be above 80%. This is because of the clouds usually approach the island from the north and, because of the high mountain slopes, hang in there. Therefore, the north side can be more volatile and humid than the south.
An other extreme is the eastern tip of the island (Ponta do São Lourenço) where it is extremely dry. A huge contract with the rest of the island. Here is almost no rainfall and the wind from sea is often strong.
And if you go to the neighbor island, Porto Santo you will notice that this is much drier and hotter than Madeira. Yet another extreme!
